BREAST CANCER SELF-EXAMINATION SAVE LIVES

BREAST CANCER SELF-EXAMINATION SAVE LIVES

As you will undoubtedly know, from the influx of pink ribbons on everything from football players’ uniforms to milk cartons, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. This month is set aside to call attention and raise funds for research into breast cancer causes, prevention, and treatment, and so it seems fitting that we spotlight the importance of early detection of breast cancer. If you find anything that concerns you, make an appointment with your gynecologist at Women to Women in Hollywood, FL.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SELF EXAM

One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. According to BreastCancer.org, in 2016 there will be 246,660 new cases diagnosed and over 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year. One of our best tools against this insidious disease is early detection through screening. The best screening for breast cancer you can receive is the one you give yourself. It can be too easy to let a month or two slip by and not do your self-exam, so here are some tips and reminders about this very important health.

Multi-Level Screening is Important

Some medical sources think that self-examination gives women a false sense of security, causing them to skip other screening steps. It is important to remember that self-examination is just one level of screening, and you should go through all levels of screening as your age, family history, and behavior history calls for. Be sure to make an appointment for a yearly clinical exam by your gynecologist who may be able to discover something you are not. Mammograms are still advised and we will cover details of current recommendations in our next blog. Call Women to Women OB-GYN Care in Hollywood, FL for an appointment. We speak Russian and Spanish, as well as English.
